How Long Does Ayahuasca Last? The Timeline From the First Cup to Day Three

The honest answer is "several hours," and the number that matters more for planning is not the ceremony. It is the days around it.

The short answer

Effects typically begin about 30 to 60 minutes after drinking, and the experience lasts several hoursRuffell 2023

There is no single clock time, because it varies by person, by preparation and by how a center runs the night. Treat the ceremony as an evening and plan the days either side of it.

The number that matters for planning is the 72 hours afterwards: rest, no big decisions, and no tight travel connections.

People ask how long ayahuasca lasts the way they would ask about a film or a flight, wanting a number to plan around. The reason you will not find a precise one is not secrecy. It is that the honest answer has several parts, and the most important part is not the ceremony itself.

The timeline in stages

Before: the day of the ceremony

Most centers ask for a fast, or a very light meal several hours beforehand, and for you to stay well hydrated through the day. The exact instructions are your center's to give. Do not improvise this part, and ask them for their exact guidance if it is not clear.

The wait: roughly 30 to 60 minutes

After you drink, the effects take time to arrive. In the published literature, onset is typically between 30 and 60 minutesRuffell 2023 It is a nervy wait for many people. Breathing and patience are the only things that help, and checking the time does not.

The ceremony: several hours

The experience, including the most intense stretch and any purging, lasts several hoursRuffell 2023 How the night is structured, whether there is a second cup, how people are looked after and when it formally closes, depends on the center. This is one more reason the vetting questions are worth asking in advance: ask what a typical night looks like and how it ends. For the experience itself, see what happens during an ayahuasca ceremony.

The next 24 hours

Expect to be tired, tender and unusually open. Rest is the plan. Eat gently, stay hydrated and keep stimulation low. If you can, write down what happened in order, without interpreting it, before it fades.

The first 72 hours

This stretch matters more than people expect. Specialists describe the period immediately after as one of the most delicate parts of the process, and recommend support in these days to reduce the risk of prolonged distress, isolation or impulsive decisionsICEERS The practical rule is simple: nothing irreversible for 72 hours. Our guide to the first 72 hours has the full protocol.

The following month

Integration, meaning turning what you saw into something you do, takes weeks, not hours. That is the part that decides whether the night changes anything. Our integration guide lays out the month.

What this means for your plans

Planning, not rules

These are practical suggestions, not clinical requirements. Your center will tell you what suits how they work.

  • Do not book a flight, an exam or an important meeting the next day. Give yourself at least a buffer day, and ideally three, before you re-enter normal life.
  • Ask about check-out. Find out when you are expected to leave and whether you can stay an extra night if you need to.
  • Arrange the ride home. You should not be solving travel logistics on no sleep.
  • Tell your people when you will be reachable again, so silence does not alarm anyone.

If you are planning the whole stretch, from the first conversation with your doctor to the day you are back at work, our 30-day preparation plan puts it on one calendar.
